In case you do not feel like sitting outside all night dealing with the bugs and condensation, then there are methods to catch catfish while you sleep.
A very popular method to catch catfish without having to be present is set hooks, bush hook, or limb lines. The name varies depending who you talk to, but they all mean the same. This method is pretty simple. Go to your local sporting goods store and look for trotline string. This usually comes in 100 pound test or higher. Now pick up some 8 ought hooks and some 2 to 6 ounce egg weights, depending on the current you will be fishing. Now you are ready to get set up to catch catfish while you sleep.
Once you get to your favorite fishing spot, look for places where the current come towards the bank. If you are fishing a lake, then look for a 2 to 3 foot depth change close to the bank. Next you want to find sturdy bushes or overhanging limbs on the water. The limbs need to be sturdy enough to catch catfish, but flexible enough to allow them to fight. If the limb is to stiff the catfish could pull the hook out while he is fighting.
The bait choice for limb lines depends on location and the type of catfish you are targeting. For Flathead catfish you want to use live bait. Usually bream or perch are a good choice, because they will stay alive on the hook longer than bait fish. If you are targeting Blue Catfish, then you will want cut bait on the hook. This could be the head of a fish, or chunks of the fish.
If you have minimum current in the waters you are fishing, then do not use any weight on your set line. This will allow the live bait to swim freely and the cut bait to move with the movement of the water. Even a slight movement of the bait will catch catfish, because of their curiosity.
Now you can head to bed and come back in the morning and haul in your catch.
